SALISBURY — The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch, severe thunderstorm warning, flash flood warning and a strong wind advisory for Rowan County ahead of Tuesday and almost all of that came to pass during the following storm.

By the end of the storm, Duke Energy’s power outage map showed more than 11,000 buildings that reported outages during Tuesday’s storm. Duke Energy did not provide a time of restoration for those outages, saying that the severe weather and flooding conditions made it difficult for crews to assess and repair any storm-related damage. Crews from the company still worked across Rowan County to assess trees falling onto power lines and help emergency responders remove any safety hazards.

Multiple roads across the county were shut down due to the weather conditions. Highway 801 was closed in the area of Centenary Church Road due to a downed power line and vehicle crash. Stokes Ferry Road was shut down in the area of the Sills Drive intersection due to the storm breaking off the top of a utility pole and causing power lines to lay in the road. Parts of Old Beatty Ford Road, St. Peter’s Church Road, Old Mocksville Road and many more were closed for most of the day either due to flooding or downed utility poles and lines.

Fire departments and rescue squads worked throughout the storm to remove downed trees that blocked roadways and to shut down and assess roads affected by utility poles.

Statesville Boulevard between Jake Alexander Boulevard and Hurley School Road suffered a power outage along with the 11,000 roads, leaving traffic lights out throughout the stretch. When a traffic light is out, North Carolina state law mandates that drivers come to a complete stop at the intersection and treat it like a stop sign.
