Staff report

CONCORD — Carson girls basketball coach Chloe Monroe had looked forward to Friday’s game at Concord’s Rimer Gym.

The Cougars had opened South Piedmont Conference play with a 20-point loss to the Spiders, so the rematch would provide a measuring stick for how much progress Carson has made.

Carson has gotten better since November, but so has Concord. The Spiders beat the Cougars pretty easily, 57-29.

Kaylin Williams, a junior forward, outscored Carson single-handedly. She can shoot the ball. She scored 30 points and had 11 rebounds.

Carson (1-14, 0-8) got off to a good start, with early buckets from Rylee Hedrick and Emma Carpenter providing a 4-0 lead, but the Spiders (6-9, 4-4) scored the next seven.

Carson missed numerous free-throw opportunities in the first quarter and slid behind 16-8 after.

The Cougars were still in the game at halftime, down 25-14, but when Carson started the second half with a three-minute scoring drought, the Spiders pushed their lead to 31-14.

Natalie Nebrich, a long-armed shot-blocker had 10 rebounds for the Spiders and may have set a record for rejections.

Hedrick, who scored 23 on Wednesday when Carson beat Statesville for its first victory, had 12 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Laila Furr had seven points and five steals.

Carson shot 20 percent, made 34 turnovers and went 8-for-19 at the foul line. No amount of hustle and effort could overcome those numbers.
