Area sports briefs: Dillard explodes in 91-67 win

Northwest Guilford opted to play a box-and-one against Davie’s high-scoring Nate Jones in the second round of the 4A playoffs, and that was a possibility for which the War Eagles had diligently prepared in practice.
The result was a career performance from Shannon Dillard. The senior collected 39 points on 17-for-19 shooting.
Davie rolled to a 26-10 lead after a quarter and romped 91-67.
Davie also has both Martin twins healthy and clicking now, and Cody and Caleb combined for 34 points.
Jones had 14 of his 16 points in the second half after NWG abandoned the box-and-one.
Davis Absher had 10 assists for fifth-seeded Davie (21-6), which gets to play at home on Friday against No. 9 seed Richmond County.
Richmond is coached by an old Davie nemesis, Dave Laton, who coached for years at West Forsyth.
Catawba women
Seniors Nisha Long, Dana Hicks and Jolysa Connor were honored before tipoff and then led Catawba to a 62-60 SAC win against Mars Hill on Wednesday at Goodman Gym.
Long made two free throws with 13 seconds left for the decisive points. She had 21 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.
Hicks had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Chloe Bully scored 14 points. Connor had nine rebounds.
Catawba (17-8, 12-5) trailed Mars Hill (12-14, 5-12) by 10 at halftime.
Catawba stayed tied for first place in the league heading to Saturday’s regular season finales.
Catawba will be at Newberry.
Moose stars
Darius Moose (Carson) had 22 points and nine rebounds for Brevard in a 93-90 loss to Newberry on Wednesday.
Catawba baseball
Catawba lost 6-2 at St. Andrews on Wednesday in its first road action of the season.
Catawba (6-4) scored on sac flies by Greg Lawson and Ethan Satterfield in the fourth inning.
Chris Dula (forearm) returned to the Indian lineup and picked up a pair of hits. Satterfield also had two hits.
Joe Kase started on the mound. Ross Whitley took the loss.
North Hills hoops
The North Hills varsity boys rolled to an 82-52 win against Grace Christian in the first round of the NCISAA state playoffs.
Vismantas Marijosius had 23 points and eight rebounds for the Eagles. Povilas Dambrauskas had 17 points and nine rebounds. Moussa Doucara had 11 points and nine rebounds. Nikolas Petruk had 12 points and seven assists.
North Hills takes on Flora MacDonald today at 2:30pm. All games for the rest of the tournament will be played at North Raleigh Christian Academy.
The North Hills middle school girls team beat Covenant Classical 37-20 to finish unbeaten in conference play.
Olivia Houghton scored 11 points. Sierra Eagle had nine, and Dajah Glenn and Marissa Murdock had seven apiece.
The North Hills middle school boys team crushed Covenant Classical 58-8 to finish unbeaten in the conference.
Wez Fazia scored 14 points for the Eagles. Garrett Beck had 12, and Colin Lewis scored nine.
7th-grade hoops
West Rowan’s boys lost to Mooresville 40-24.
The Red Imps forced 25 turnovers.
Kortez Weeks scored eight points for the Bulldogs (6-2), while Armoni Hogue had six.
Weeks and Jovon Quarles led the Bulldogs on the boards.
Jay Davis and Noah Allen scored 12 points each for the Imps.
Knox’s girls edged North Rowan 34-27 in overtime. It was 24-all at the end of regulation.
Tyzarea Alexander scored 16 points for the Trojans, including eight in overtime. Niah Spratt had 11 points, and Destiny Hightower scored five.
Priscilla Oglesby led the Mavericks with 16 points.
Knox is home today against Corriher-Lipe’s Yellow Jackets.
China Grove’s beat Corriher-Lipe 25-18.
Keara McClary Keara McClary scored 14 points to lead the Red Devils, while Madilyn Jones hauled down 12 rebounds.
Leading Corriher-Lipe with eight points was Keirsten Morgan.
Pfeiffer athletics
Pfeiffer’s Brittany Cox was named to the Academic All-America basketball team for D-II.
Justin Harris went 5-for-5 and Kevin Price hit two homers as Pfeiffer’s baseball team won 13-8 at Wingate on Wednesday.
Pfeiffer had 18 hits.
Prep girls hoops
South Davidson’s girls couldn’t contain South Stokes star Samantha Adams and lost 61-49 on Wednesday in the second round of the 1A playoffs.
Larsen Sigmon and Hunter Sigmon each had 10 points for South.
Local golf
Fifty-one GARS members played at Warrior this week.
Low ‘A’ flight player with a net of 66.04 was Ross Howard.
Low ‘B’ flight player with a net of 66.12 was Ed Lockhart.
Low ‘C’ flight player with a net of 68.35 was Bobby Wagoner.
John Cress was the low ‘D’ flight player with a net of 67.91.
