West Rowan senior John Whitley’s 1995 Chevrolet Tahoe was deemed the winner of West Rowan High School’s muddy truck competition Friday.
The week of George Washington’s birthday is typically the week to celebrate national FFA week.
West Rowan High School’s agriculture education department, which includes members of the school’s chartered National FFA club, took part by having special themed days for students, offering home-baked cookies to staff members and finally, holding a muddy truck contest.
The West Rowan club was chartered at the opening of the school in 1959 and now has nearly one quarter of the student body participating, with 225 current members.
The trucks entered this year continued a contest that is in its fifth year.
Whitley earned the muddies title because of the amount of mud that was clinging to the bottom and inside the passenger compartment.
The prize was bragging rights and a crisp $20 bill. Someone noted that it would not cover the gas spent during the 45 minutes it took to prepare the entry. It was also determined that George Washington was never given the opportunity to be a National FFA member because the organization was founded in 1928.
