Softball and baseball roundup: Mustangs roll to shutout wins

SOFTBALL

GRANITE QUARRY — Freshman Madi Tigert pitched a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts to lead East Rowan to a smooth 8-0 South Piedmont Conference win against South Rowan on Tuesday.

“We had excellent defense to back Madi up for the other 11 outs,” East coach Todd McNeely said.

Maddie Roberts had four RBIs for the Mustangs (3-0, 3-0).

Jordan Dry hit a two-run homer and drove in three.

MOUNT ULLA — West Rowan lost 7-5 to North Iredell in a non-conference game on Monday despite a grand slam by EA Nance.

North Iredell pulled the game out with a four-run seventh.

Arabelle Shulenberger struck out eight for the Falcons.

West (1-2) didn’t schedule any league games until after Emma Clarke reports for duty after the basketball state championship game. West won’t start South Piedmont Conference play until it takes on Central Cabarrus on March 15.

HUNTERSVILLE — Six errors hurt Carson in a 14-4 South Piedmont Conference loss at Lake Norman Charter on Tuesday.

Caylee Snow and Madison Clark had two hits each for the Cougars (1-4, 1-3). Clark, Piper Thonen and Evie White had RBIs.

SALISBURY — Salisbury pummeled Thomasville 18-2 and 16-1 in Tuesday’s doubleheader to start Central Carolina Conference play.

Ashley Yang struck out seven and hit an inside-the-park homer in the first game. She scored three runs and drove in two.

Katie Peeler and Allie Peeler scored two runs each.

In the second game, Katie Peeler struck out nine.

Jayla Robertson had three RBIs. Yang had two hits.

Yang, Allie Peeler, Katie Peeler and Taliyah McCombs scored two runs each.

SPENCER — Kaci Gordon hit a home run for South Davidson in Tuesday’s 16-6 CCC win at North Rowan (0-1, 0-1).

KANNAPOLIS  — Myla McNeely and Averi Eberle had RBIs for A.L. Brown (0-3, 0-1) in a 20-2 Greater Metro Conference loss to Hickory Ridge on Tuesday.

The Bulls scored 11 runs in the sixth.

 

BASEBALL

GRANITE QUARRY —  Sophomore lefty Harrison Ailshie dominated on the mound as undefeated East Rowan beat South Rowan 7-0 at Staton Field on Tuesday.

Ailshie faced only 19 batters in six innings. He allowed one hit, while striking out nine and walking two.

Joe Burleyson pitched the seventh for the Mustangs (6-0, 5-0) and struck out three Raiders (2-3, 1-3).

McCall Henderson homered and drove in four runs to lead East’s offense. Cobb Hightower homered and drove in two.

Hightower, Henderson and Sam Blackwelder had two hits each. Nate Hayworth scored twice.

CONCORD — West Rowan (2-3, 1-3) had 13 hits in a 12-2 South Piedmont Conference win at Concord on Tuesday.

Corbin Bailey shut down the Spiders for six innings with six strikeouts. Brant Graham struck out three in the seventh.

Graham had four hits and three RBIs. Cole Blevins homered, drove in four and scored three.

Maddox Moore had three hits and scored two runs. Gaige Scruggs had two hits. Luke Ponczka had a double and scored twice. Drew Burton scored three runs.

HUNTERSVILLE — Carson’s early winning streak ended with a 7-3 SPC loss at Lake Norman Charter.

A four-run third proved decisive for the Knights.

Caden Lewis and Daxton Savage had two hits each for the Cougars. Savage had two RBIs, while Lewis had one.

Drew Young pitched well in relief for the Cougars (4-1, 4-1). Kendal Sifford took the loss.

“No errors in the scorebook, but we didn’t make some plays in the outfield we needed to make,” Carson coach Kyle Bridges said. “We were flat, just didn’t have it tonight, and Lake Norman Charter is pretty good.”

David Wignot had three hits and two RBIs for the Knights (3-2, 3-2). Colin Weathers pitched a complete game with six strikeouts and only one walk.

KANNAPOLIS — Northwest Cabarrus retired Kyle Seager’s No. 9 jersey on Monday at Atrium Health Ballpark.

A.L. Brown beat the Trojans 7-3 in a non-conference game. Mason Cook, Mason Deal, Drew Ryan and Maddox Langley had two hits each for the Wonders.

Langley drove in two, while CJ Gray had a triple.

Jesse Morton, Ryan and Kaidon Shinn handled the pitching for the Wonders.

SALISBURY — Thomasville out-hit Salisbury 13-5 and beat the Hornets 14-4 in a CCC game on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs scored seven runs in the second against  on their way to their first win of the season.

The Hornets (0-3, 0-1) will get some reinforcements soon from the basketball team.
