North Carolina Central freshman Kyla Bryant (Salisbury) was named third team all-conference and was named to the All-Freshman team for the MEAC.

Bryant has averaged 11.7 points, 2.3 assists and 1.8 steals per game. She was second in the conference in minutes played, averaging 33 per game.

N.C. Central plays is seeded third for the conference tournament and plays today.

Clarion’s Hannah Wilkerson (North Rowan) has completed the season. She averaged 8.4 points and 4.4 rebounds.

Bethany Rymer (South Rowan) has completed her season at Columbia International. She averaged 8.9 points and 4.8 rebounds.

Carleigh Perry (Carson) finished the season at Guilford averaging 7.0 points and 6.5 rebounds. She led the Quakers in blocks and was second in assists.

Hannah Isley (Carson) led Pfeiffer in scoring with 10.9 points per game and averaged 4.8 rebounds.

Dede Cuthbertson (West Rowan) is a member of the Johnson & Wales team that played in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Division 2 Small College National Championship on Wednesday in Petersburg, Va.

Icesis Nwafor (Salisbury) played in 18 games as a freshman for Bluefield State.

 

College men’s basketball

Livingstone’s Khyree Temple was named a second team HBCU All-American by BOXTOROW.

Tee Harris (East Rowan) has completed his freshman season at Wheeling. He averaged 7.3 points and 4.0 rebounds. Harris scored in double figures in five of Wheeling’s last six games.

KANNAPOLIS — Northwest Cabarrus won a South Piedmont Conference match by two strokes over East Rowan at The Club at Irish Creek on Monday.

East’s Landon Merrell was medalist with a 4-under 31. Jaden Sprinkle was 1-over and Brady McIntyre was 5-over.

MOUNT GILEAD — Sprinkle shot 2-under on Tuesday as was medalist when East played North Stanly at the Tillery Tradition.

Merrell was even par. McIntyre shot 4-over.

 

High school soccer

SALISBURY — Salisbury dropped a tough non-conference match on Tuesday, losing 3-0 to A.L. Brown.

Stella Koontz played well for the Hornets, who fell to 1-1-1 overall.

“We weren’t quite ready to play after the spring break layoff and that is ultimately my responsibility,” Salisbury coach Matt Parrish said. “We have the rest of the week to pull things together because the conference schedule starts with Thomasville on Monday.”

Salisbury had a match scheduled on Wednesday with Concord, but the Spiders had to reschedule a conference match for that night.

Salisbury dropped a tough non-conference match vs AL Brown, 3-0 Tuesday night. Stella Koontz played well for the Hornets, who fall to 1-1-1 overall. We weren’t quite ready to play after the spring break lay off and that is ultimately my responsibility. (Salisbury was originally scheduled to play Concord on Wednesday night, but they had to reschedule us due a conference match.)

WINSTON-SALEM  — DJ Kent scored 23 points and Carson Daniel had 22 as Central Cabarrus’ second-seeded boys beat top-seeded Hickory 87-78 in the 3A West regional final on Tuesday.

Central Cabarrus will play (Fayetteville) 71st for a state championship.

High school tennis

TYRO — Salisbury won 9-0 against West Davidson in Tuesday’s Central Carolina Conference match.

AJ Jarrell, Gray Davis, Bryant Davis, Reid Hlavacek, Sawyer Cornelison and Ben Lawson were singles winners for the Hornets (4-0, 2-0).

Jarrell/Gray Davis, Hlavacek/Cornelison and Bryant Davis/Lawson swept doubles. The closest match was 8-5 at No. 2 doubles.

The Hornets also won 9-0 against South Davidson on Monday.

THOMASVILLE — A short-handed North Rowan team lost 5-1 to East Davidson in a CCC match on Monday.

Daniel Montes won at No. 1 singles for the Cavaliers (0-2, 0-2).

CONCORD — East Rowan won 5-4 at Central Cabarrus in a South Piedmont Conference match on Monday.

The Mustangs (2-0, 2-0) got singles wins from Thomas Stokes, Preston Stephens, Will Kesler and Josh Gardner.

East’s 1 and 2 players Owen Kesler and Blake Mathews lost singles matches but teamed for a decisive 9-7 win at No. 1 doubles.

MOUNT ULLA — West Rowan lost 6-3 to Lake Norman Charter in a South Piedmont Conference match on Monday.

The Falcons (1-2, 1-2) got singles wins from Sam Gulledge and freshman Callen Batts and took a tight No. 3 doubles match.

Carson (0-2, 0-2) lost a 5-4 SPC match to Concord. South Rowan (0-3, 0-2) lost 9-0 to Northwest Cabarrus.

Cam Honeycutt’s 35 led Erwin Middle School to a win at Warrior.

Erwin shot 155. Cam Honeycut shot 35. Brody Benfield and Griffin Robins shot 39s, with Sawyer Kluttz next at 42.

Low ‘A’ Flight player was Steve Matteson with a net of 67.17.

Low ‘B’ Flight player was Dickie Peeler with a net of 66.45.

Low ‘C’ Flight player was Michael VanHecke with a net of 65.06.

Low ‘D’ Flight player was Buddy Barger with a net of 62.91.

Larry Petrea shot a 79 to win low gross , while Barger, 89, won low net and shot an 88 to beat his age.

Larry Luther was Super Senior winner with a net of 65.53.

 In a McCanless Couples Captain’s Choice event, the team of  Lenny Mauseli, Byron Sheesley and David  & Azalee Huneycutt took first place.

P-daber, Heather DePalma-Spivey, Tammie Drew and Hunter Hammill came in second.

David Huneycutt was closest to the pin winner. Drew won longest putt.
