SALISBURY — Police are investigating after someone broke into a building at Ellis Park and stole more than $4,000 in cash and multiple electronics from the Parks and Recreation offices there.
Deputies were called to Ellis Park, located on Old Mocksville Road, at approximately 9 a.m. on Monday after an employee showed up for work and found that a few of the desk drawers had been obviously tampered with, said a spokesperson for the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office. The employee then found that over $4,000 had been stolen from the safe in the building and three iPads and a Dell laptop had all been stolen as well. The incident report states that the total estimated loss in the burglary was $6,800.
Deputies noticed that the door to the office did not have any signs of a forced entry even though the employee claimed he remembered locking and securing the door, the spokesperson said.
One of the iPads has been reclaimed by deputies after it was pinged and located lying in a bush on the side of Lee Street in Spencer.
The Therapeutic Recreation division of the Rowan County Parks and Recreation department is based out of Ellis Park. Included under that umbrella is the Special Olympics, which recently raised more than $10,000 as part of its annual Polar Plunge fundraiser.
