SALISBURY — The Rowan County Board of Commissioners will consider a request from Project Light to rent space in West End Plaza during its upcoming meeting on Monday.

Project Light, a local nonprofit that is aimed at stopping human trafficking, has requested space in the old Salisbury Mall. The county has identified a 2,700 square-foot space with public access that would fit the organization’s needs, according to the proposal.

The lease would begin on July 1 and run through June 30, 2029. Project Light would agree to pay the county $1 a month in order to keep the lease. The organization would be required to maintain public liability and property damage insurance in order to remain in compliance with the proposed lease agreement.

The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Monday and will be held at the Rowan County Administration building located at 130 W. Innes St. in Salisbury. The other agenda items that will be discussed include:

  • The commissioners will consider a request from Salisbury Rowan Utilities for an easement on the Rowan County Detention Annex property in order to connect a sewer line to a property nearby that a developer is planning to construct an industrial development on.
  • The commissioners will continue a legislative hearing for an ordinance change that would set up specific standards for racing complexes. The hearing began during the February 19 meeting and was tabled until Monday. • The commissioners will hold a quasi-judicial hearing on a special use permit request form Shree Shree Askhar Corporation to expand the Express Corner gas station located at 4095 Old Beatty Ford Road. The report by planning staff states the company wants to replace the current canopy over the gas pumps with a larger canopy.
