GOLD HILL – Four people were displaced from their Gold Hill home after a fire on Monday. Unfortunately, a pet cat did not make it out.
Firefighters responded to a home in the 1000 block of Liberty Road at approximately 10 a.m. after a neighbor was driving by and noticed smoke coming from the building, said a fire official on scene. When they arrived, they noticed heavy smoke coming from the southern side of the house.
The firefighters were able to rescue a dog and a cat from the house and were treating the cat for smoke inhalation, the official said. One cat in the home died as a result of the fire.
The fire was mostly contained to a bedroom on the southern side of the house and firefighters were able to have a knockdown on the flames within 10 minutes. No people were home when the fire started, according to the official.
The Red Cross was called to the home to assist with four individuals, two adults and two children, who were displaced as a result of the damage.
Gold Hill Volunteer, West Liberty, Northeast Cabarrus, Rockwell Rural, Rockwell, Granite Quarry and Miller’s Ferry fire departments and Rowan Rescue Squad all assisted in the efforts.
