Catawba freshman Hayden Simmerson (Carson) was named SAC Pitcher of the Week. He struck out 11 in five innings in two relief outings.

Catawba got down 11-0 after four innings at Mount Olive on Tuesday and couldn’t get all the way back.

The Trojans won 15-11.

Logan Rogers (Carson) homered for Catawba. Levi Perrell had three hits, including two doubles. Cole Hales (Carson) had two hits, including a double.

Catawba (19-6) used seven pitchers. Starter Brandon Rodgers took the loss.

Surry Community College (20-4) is ranked eighth nationally.

Catcher Matthew Connolly (West Rowan) is batting .410 with four homers, 29 RBIs and 22 steals. Second baseman Luke Graham (West Rowan) is batting .306 with 24 runs scored. Jalan Chambers (A.L. Brown) is batting .356 with three homers and 23 RBIs.

Chambers (4-0), Mikey Beasley (Carson, 3-0) and JD Basinger (East Rowan, 3-0) have been key members of the pitching staff.

 

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Catawba’s Bri Herring was named SAC Player of the Week after hitting two homers and driving in seven runs in a sweep of Mars Hill.

Lees-McRae freshman Lonna Addison (Carson) was named Conference Carolinas Pitcher of the Week.

Addison was 3-0 with 38 strikeouts for the Bobcats. Addison struck out 24 in a doubleheader sweep of King. Lauren Ritchie (A.L. Brown) hit a home run.

Emory & Henry freshman Karsen Simpson (West Rowan) is 8-for-18 (.444) with five RBIs.

 

COLLEGE SWIMMING

Catawba’s Mari Reckmann was voted the South Atlantic Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year for women’s swimming.

 

COLLEGE WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

NC Central closed the season with a loss to Howard in the semifinals of the MEAC Tournament held in Norfolk, Va.

Freshman Kyla Bryant (Salisbury) averaged 11.2 points and 4.6 rebounds. She had 69 assists and 53 steals.

 

COLLEGE WOMEN’S TENNIS

Pfeiffer lost 5-4 to Methodist on Tuesday. Riley Isley (Carson) won at No. 4 singles, while Alison Sloop (Carson) helped the Falcons win at No. 1 doubles.

 

COLLEGE MEN’S BASKETBALL

Claflin’s Jailen Williams (Carson) averaged 8.4 points and 3.4 rebounds this season. Williams had 60 assists and 21 steals.

 

CATAWBA WOMEN’S ATHLETICS

In honor of the CLASS Act Fundraiser, Catawba will honor and recognize women’s athletics on April 13.

Softball plays a doubleheader that day with UVA Wise at 1 p.m.

Soccer plays Gardner-Webb at  3 p.m.

Lacrosse plays UVA Wise on Senior Day at 3:30 p.m.

Consider sponsoring a sign in honor or in memory of a current or former Catawba women’s student-athlete. The signs will include the student-athlete’s name, photo and a personal message from you. These signs will be displayed around the athletics facilities on April 13. Sponsoring a sign supports our current women’s student-athletes and teams. Deadline to sponsor a sign is Monday, March 25.

 

LOCAL GOLF

GARS members played at Lexington Golf Club.

Low ‘A’ Flight player was Larry Petrea  with a net of 68.03. Low ‘B’ Flight player was Ted Weant with a net of 65.40.

Low ‘C’ Flight player was Steve Butner with a net of 64.08. Low ‘D’ Flight player was Joe Dunn with a net of 63.99.

Petrea shot 76 to win low gross, while Dunn won low net.

Rogers was the Super Senior winner with a net of 64.27.

Weant eagled the par-4 No. 4 hole. Harry Poore eagled the par-5 No. 14 hole.

The McCanless Couples played a Captain’s Choice event.

The first-place team was Crystal Clement, Larry Clifton, Todd Cleary and Don Terzi.

The second-place team was Calvin Smith, Richard Long and Pam & Ralph Carver.

 Heather DePalma-Spivey won longest putt. Smith won closest to the pin.

 

SALISBURY ACADEMY SOCCER

The Salisbury Academy girls soccer team won 5-0 in the season opener against American Renaissance School.

Scoring for Salisbury Academy were Elise Hinson with three goals and Elle Blankenship and Anna Kate Goodman with a goal each.

Audrey Faggart and Hinson were credited with the shutout.

The Jaguars carried that momentum into an 8-0 win against Iredell Charter Academy. Blankenship had four goals, Hinson, Emmaline Myers, Campbell Aron and Mary Masters Goodman scored goals.  Faggart and Hinson recorded the shutout.

Rowan County AD Brad Hinson is returning to Cox Mill as AD.

Carson’s Josh Trexler was recognized by the NCHSAA with a Citation Award.

 

SALISBURY-ROWAN HOF

The Hall of Fame committee will start on the Class of 2024 in April.

Applications for potential Hall of Famers are being accepted through April 19.

No athletes or coaches can be considered without an application.
