SALISBURY — A Concord man known as “Batman” has been charged with murder after a shooting in Enochville left one man dead on Thursday.
Deputies were called to a home in the 500 block of Crystal Lane at approximately 12:50 p.m., after a resident called 911 and said that a family member had been shot, according to a release from the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office. When deputies arrived, they found 33-year-old Jonathan Wayne Yancey dead from a single gunshot wound.
Witnesses identified 36-year-old Cody Dewayne Helms, known by the nickname Batman, as the shooter, according to the release. Helms allegedly fled the scene after the homicide and was reportedly found and arrested by a Kannapolis Police officer one mile away from the home. Police records list the arrest as occurring in the 400 block of Brentwood Circle.
The witnesses told deputies that Helms and Yancey were friends and that just before the shooting the two had gotten into an argument.
Helms, a Concord resident, was charged with murder and placed in the Rowan County Detention Center without an initial bond.
