College softball: Indians outscored twice by Newberry

NEWBERRY, S.C. — Catawba’s softball team dropped a South Atlantic Conference doubleheader at Newberry on Tuesday.
Catawba (18-20, 6-8) took a lead to the bottom of the fifth in both games, but couldn’t close out the Wolves.
Newberry (20-18, 8-8) won 8-4 and 11-10.
Riley Tucker and Kary Hales pitched three innings each in the first game, with Hales taking the loss. Catawba took a 4-3 lead to the bottom of the fifth.
Tucker and Brianna Gallagher had doubles. Tucker, Gallagher, Brianna Herring and Madison Taylor had two hits each.,
Catawba took a 10-6 lead to the bottom of the fifth in the second game, but the Wolves tied the game with a four-run fifth and scored a decisive run in the sixth. Hales took the loss.
Gallagher homered and drove in three for the Indians.
Herring, Hale, Courtnee Carter and Grace Flynn had doubles.
Catawba will look to bounce back at home on Saturday when Carson-Newman visits for a doubleheader.
