College baseball: Honeycutt hits 48th and 49th homers for Heels; Kepley, Klingler having great seasons

CHAPEL HILL — Vance Honeycutt (Salisbury) went 5-for-12 in UNC’s weekend sweep of Notre Dame.
Honeycutt hit home runs in the second and third games of the series giving the junior 49 for his career. The program record is 54.
Honeycutt has hit 12 homers this season and is second in the ACC in steals (20) and runs scored (50).
UNC (29-7, 14-4 ACC) has won 23 straight at home this season.
Cameron Padgett (East Rowan) came out of the bullpen to get four outs in the series finale on Sunday.

Charlie Klingler (East Rowan) recorded his 100th career hit over the weekend for High Point.
Klingler is batting .297 with three homers, 11 doubles and 31 RBIs for the Panthers.

Liberty’s Kane Kepley (South Rowan) is in top five in Conference USA in walks (26), on-base percentage (.465), steals (11) and runs (39).
He’s batting .341 with six homers and nine doubles.

East Carolina’s Jake Hunter (East Rowan) pitched well for four innings in a relief appearance against Charlotte, but the 49ers rallied to win the game 8-7 with a big ninth inning.
