DOBSON — Surry Community College’s nationally ranked baseball team won three more Region 10 games over the weekend.

Surry (29-7, 11-4) has gotten a big boost from Rowan County players, most of them with experience from playing for good Rowan County American Legion squads.

Carson’s Mikey Beasley is part of the weekend pitching rotation, while former West Rowan players Matthew Connolly, Lucas Graham and Elijah Palmer are regulars in the Surry starting lineup.

Also playing a huge role in Surry’s success as a two-way player is A.L. Brown graduate Jalan Chambers, a 6-foot-3 lefty who has stood out at the plate and on the mound. Chambers is a sophomore in his second year in the two-year program.

Surry swept Caldwell Community College in a weekend series, winning 11-1 on Saturday in Dobson and taking a Sunday doubleheader in Lenoir, 2-0 and 8-0.

Graham had two hits and three RBIs in the opener, while Palmer went 3-for-3 to back a stout pitching performance by Beasley, who won his fifth game. Beasley allowed three hits and two walks.

Chambers carried most of the load in the 2-0 win, striking out 10 and pitching into the sixth inning. He walked four, but allowed only one hit.

Chambers also had two hits.

In the 8-0 win, Graham scored two runs, Former East Rowan pitcher JD Basinger closed the game.

Connolly has had such an incredible season that he’s being pitched around more and more. He had six walks over the weekend. He’s batting .361 with six homers and 39 RBIs. He’s stolen 24 bases and has on-base percentage north of .500.

Chambers has won five times on the mound and is batting .325 with three homers and 31 RBIs. He’s stolen 21 bases.

Graham, the second baseman, is batting .325. He’s scored 33 runs while knocking in 20.

Basinger owns three wins.

Surry’s roster also includes Emory Taylor (Carson) and Zach McNeely (West Rowan).
