College athletics: First SAC championship for Catawba women’s tennis

SUMTER, S.C. — The 38th-ranked and sixth-seeded Catawba College women’s tennis team made history on Saturday afternoon with its first South Atlantic Conference tournament title.
The Indians upset sixth-ranked and top-seeded Wingate, 4-1, at the Palmetto Tennis Center.
Wingate took an early 1-0 lead, claiming the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles.
The Catawba Indians then locked in one point at a time, claiming No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles to earn the championship crown.
Sophomore Ami Miya clinched the championship point with a 6-1, 7-5 win. For her efforts, she was named the Tournament MVP.
In addition to the tournament title, the Catawba earns an automatic bid to the regional.
