ROWAN COUNTY — The Junior Sheriff’s Camp gives aspiring youth who are interested in becoming a law enforcement officer the opportunity to join the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office for a weeklong learning experience.

The camp aims to provide fun, team building challenges, a field trip and quality time with real world law enforcement officers. By joining the Junior Sheriff’s Camp, campers can learn about what it means to observe, learn and protect.

Participants will learn about the benefits of public service and the challenges and demands associated with law enforcement as a profession. They will meet and hear from members of special law enforcement units and gain a deeper understanding of each unit’s responsibilities and how they work together with patrol officers. Students will leave with a better understanding of the risks and responsibilities officers accept in keeping all citizens safe.

The Junior Sheriff’s Camp is open for students ages 11 to 14 years old. Students will be given a camp shirt and academy journal. Campers will take a field trip the last day of camp to see the Rowan County Justice Center, 911 operations center and Rowan County Detention Center. Free daily breakfast and lunch will be provided through Rowan-Salisbury Schools summer meal program.

Up to 25 participants will be selected based on an application essay. Our goal is to reach as many students as we can with this program. Any school student is eligible to apply.

Prospective students can only apply for one camp. The upcoming camps are:

• Session one: June 10 to 14 at Mt. Zion UCC from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• Session two: June 17 to 21 at First Baptist Church Salisbury from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• Session three: July 15 to 19 at Rowan County Sheriff’s Office Landis from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
