The Salisbury Symphony’s Family Concert Sunday, March 11 is aptly named “Children’s Hour.”
Not only will the more than 150 members of the All-County Fifth Grade Honors Chorus perform with the Salisbury Symphony as they do every season, but there will be other young performers sharing the stage as well.
The concert begins at 4 p.m. at Keppel Auditorium on the Catawba College campus. Special “family” pricing guarantees a smaller admission for a family to attend.
The program begins with Dorff’s “Three Fun Fables.” Carson High School drama students of teacher Alex Reynolds will narrate three familiar Aesop’s Fables: “The Fox and the Crow” (Keaton Brower and McKenzie Eury); “The Dog and His Reflection” (McClain Miles); and, “The Tortoise and the Hare” (Hannah Leonard). Carson High School student Savannah Deal will narrate The Tale of Peter Rabbit; and Sam Yeager will share the story of John Henry vs the Machine.
The All-County Fifth Grade Honors Chorus follows these spoken stories with musical adaptations of others. This performance of Sally Albrecht’s “Pocketful of Rhymes” is a world premiere. Little Miss Muffet (and Mozart), Jack and Jill (and Haydn), and Wee Willie Winkie (and Handel) were composed by Albrecht and arranged for orchestra by David Hagy. Albrecht is a composer, conductor, and clinician who also works for Alfred Publishing and is known for her work with choral movement. She will be attending the concert.
The concert ends with the Minuet and Finale of Stravinsky’s Pulcinella, a story told in both music and dance. Denise Paugh’s dance students at Carson High School will be the “storytellers” for this classical piece.
Tickets are $17 for adults, $4 for students, and $2 for children ages 8 and younger.
