HUNTERSVILLE — Lake Norman Charter had a great day; Northwest Cabarrus has had a great season, and East Rowan keeps plugging along, hoping it’s going to play its best when it matters most.
The South Piedmont Conference is strong in golf. It was Lake Norman Charter, which played third fiddle behind Northwest and East most of the season, that won Monday’s South Piedmont Conference Tournament at Skybrook. Lake Norman’s Charter’s top four totaled 312, one shot better than Northwest and eight better than East.
Rounding out the team scoring were West Rowan (358), South Rowan (373), Carson (375) and Robinson (418). Central Cabarrus and Concord lacked sufficient numbers to post a team score.
Northwest still won the season-long championship. East placed second over the long haul, with Lake Norman Charter third.
Northwest’s Talan Harrison shot 6-under 66 on Monday. He was the medalist for the tournament and the SPC Player of the Year as the leader for the season.
Northwest’s Cooper Burris shot 71 for second place on Monday and also was second in the season standings.
East’s best score on Monday was a 75 by Jaden Sprinkle. East’s Landon Merrell shot 77, while East’s Brady McIntyre shot 78. Jason Bonds shot 88 and was the Mustangs’ fourth scorer.
“It was a tough day for the Mustangs,” East coach Tinsley Merrell said.
For the season, Merrell was third in the conference, Sprinkle was fourth and McIntyre was fifth.
Rounding out the top 10 in the final standings were Northwest’s Logan Swanger, LNC’s Brady Macfee and Griffin Hjortsberg, West Rowan’s Tyler Kepley and Robinson’s Ben Darnell. Those 10 were designated as the All-SPC team.
Kepley shot 77 on Monday.
Jordan Blesdoe was South’s top performer for the season, while Robert Jolly led Carson.
Regional action is next, and the Mustangs, Trojans and Knights will tee it up again on Monday in Lexington at Sapona.
