SALISBURY — A woman has been charged with bringing crack cocaine onto the premises of a penal institution after deputies said that a bag fell out of her clothes while she was being booked into jail.

Ashley Lynn Bynum, 36, was originally arrested by deputies at approximately 7:25 p.m. on Thursday, when a deputy found her to be in possession of drug paraphernalia during a traffic stop, said Captain Mark McDaniel, public information officer for the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office.

While booking Bynum into the Rowan County Detention Center, detention officers reportedly witnessed Bynum with a small black baggie in her hand. When they attempted to handcuff her, another clear baggie fell out of her pants, according to McDaniel. At that point, deputies reportedly secured Bynum and searched both baggies, finding marijuana in the black one and crack cocaine in the clear one.

Bynum was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance on the premises of a penal institution or local confinement facility, possession of drug paraphernalia, felony possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. She was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center and given a $34,000 bond.
