High school boys tennis: Hornets qualify 5 for state; win second-round dual team match

SALISBURY — Salisbury boys tennis coach Roarke Burton can’t remember a crazier schedule, but the results been almost all good for the Hornets.

The 2A Midwest individual regionals, directed by Burton and hosted by Salisbury, were hit with a number of weather delays over the weekend. Those matches weren’t completed until Monday night at Wake Forest’s indoor facility.

Salisbury’s AJ Jarrell/Gray Davis team emerged as regional doubles champions.

Salisbury’s doubles team of Reid Hlavacek/Soyer Cornelison placed fourth.

Salisbury’s Bryant Davis finished third in singles.

All five will advance to the individual state competition at Holly Springs.

Salisbury had a first-round bye in the 2A dual team state playoffs and finally got to play on Tuesday in the second round.

The Hornets won 5-2 at home against Community School of Davidson.

Jarrell, Bryant Davis, Hlavacek and Ben Lawson won in singles.

Bryant Davis and Lawson clinched the match with a a win at No. 3 doubles.

The second-seeded Hornets (17-1) will play their third-round match at home at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
