High school boys tennis: Hornets, Cougars fall on first day of state tournaments

HOLLY SPRINGS — Salisbury’s doubles team of AJ Jarrell/Gray Davis won a first-round match on Friday in the 2A individual state tournament.
The Hornets prevailed 6-4, 6-1 against the Seaforth duo of Henry McFall/Matthew Bouser.
Jarrell and Davis lost 6-7, 6-1, 6-0 in the quarterfinals to Lincoln Charter’s team of Noah Cochran/Clark Mullen.
Salisbury’s doubles team of Reid Hlavacek/Soyer Cornelison was eliminated 6-0, 6-1 in the first round by the eventual state champs — Franklin Academy’s team of Derek Shuge/Nick DeLisio.
Salisbury’s Bryant Davis lost 6-2, 6-0 in the first round of singles to Franklin Academy’s Akil Vinodh.
Salisbury is still alive in the 2A dual team state playoffs and will be in fourth-round action at home on Monday.

In the 3A state tournament in Burlington, Carson’s doubles team of Karson Sloop/Austin Atwell lost 6-0, 7-6 in the first round to Carrboro’s Kai Spira/Noah Simmons.
