VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Regent University announced the hiring of Donte Minter as head coach of the Regent Royals women’s basketball team.

Minter, 40, is one of the great basketball players in Rowan County history, scoring over 2,000 points for West Rowan in four varsity seasons and leading the undefeated 2001-02 3A state champions, coached by Mike Gurley.

Minter played at Fork Union Military Academy, the University of Virginia and Appalachian State University and played for many years overseas.

Minter rejoins Regent’s program after previously serving as a Royals assistant coach from 2021–2023. He was an assistant coach with Livingstone’s women’s program last season.

“I have worked with Donte in the past, when he first got into coaching, as well as him being our top women’s assistant two seasons ago,” said Michael Allen, Regent’s AD. “With the experience he has acquired over the last decade, he is the perfect fit to help move our women’s basketball program to competitive heights.”

As an assistant coach at Livingstone College, Minter created practice plans and managed student-athlete study halls. In addition, he started the first Tip-off Dinner for the program in 20 years and created the program’s first ever endowment fund, while also having a role in developing the CIAA Freshman of the Year.

Minter is also well known in the Hampton Roads area, as he was boys jayvee coach at Norfolk Christian School from 2014–2017 and served as an assistant coach at Salem High School during the 2014–2015 season.   

Minter holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Appalachian State.
