Preview: Kannapolis City Council to hear recommended budget for upcoming fiscal year

KANNAPOLIS — After holding two work sessions going over different projects and initiatives on May 9 and 13, the Kannapolis City Council will hear the recommended budget for the 2024-2025 fiscal year at their May 20 meeting. However, no action will be taken by the city council yet. A city budget public hearing is scheduled for June 10.
The meeting will be on Monday, May 20, at the city hall building, located at 401 Laureate Way, at 6 p.m. Here are the other agenda items that will be discussed:
- Kannapolis Mayor Darrell Hinnant will be making the following proclamations: Professional Municipal Clerk Week, National Public Works Week, and Mental Health Awareness Month.
- Planning Director Richard Smith and Assistant Planning Director Elizabeth McCarty will be leading a presentation on a conditional zoning map amendment for Davidson Highway. There will be a public hearing regarding this matter.
- Director of Transportation and Environmental Services Michael Rattler will be leading a presentation on the Opal Street special assessment and acceptance to the Powell Bill street maintenance schedule. There will be a public hearing regarding this matter.
- Director of Water Resources Alex Anderson and Assistant to the City Manager Kristin Jones will be leading a presentation on appropriating cash reserves to fund watermain replacement associated with Opal Street acceptance.
- Assistant City Manager Wilmer Melton will be leading a presentation on awarding the 2024 city of Kannapolis resurfacing project contract.
- City Manager Mike Legg will be leading a resolution directing the filing of the recommended budget and setting a public hearing.
- There will be a discussion about Water and Sewer Authority of Cabarrus County board of directors appointments.
