ROWAN COUNTY — A man has been charged after deputies said he attempted to bring a pocket knife into jail after being arrested for violating a domestic violence protective order.

Deputies responded at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Saturday to East Ryder Avenue in Landis to assist a Landis Police Officer who had made an arrest but could not transport the arrestee to the magistrate’s office, said Captain Mark McDaniel, public information officer for the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office.

There, deputies reportedly found that the Landis officer had arrested 31-year-old Oliver Keith Bowman after a traffic stop. McDaniel said that during the stop, the Landis officer discovered that the passenger in Bowman’s car had an active domestic violence protective order against him and arrested him for violation of that order.

The deputies then transported Bowman to the magistrate’s office before attempting to check him into the jail. McDaniel said that a deputy searched Bowman twice and asked him if he was carrying anything that the deputy had not found, to which Bowman said no. However, the body scanner revealed a pocket knife in his waistband, which deputies removed before taking him to the magistrate’s office again and charging him with felony possession of a weapon by a prisoner.

Bowman was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center. He was given a $1,000 bond on the possession of a weapon by a prison charge. However, because the violation of a protective order was domestic-related, he was being held without bond pending his first court appearance.
