SALISBURY — A man was arrested on Friday after deputies said that he strangled a woman before grabbing her and pulling her back into the home when she tried to escape.
Deputies initially began investigating the incident after the victim of the assault drove to the Mooresville Police Department and attempted to report the domestic assault to officers there, said Chief Deputy Jason Owens, a spokesperson for the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office. Those officers referred her to the sheriff’s office because the incident had allegedly occurred at a home in Rowan County.
The woman then went to a medical center outside of the county for treatment for her injuries, where deputies observed that the injuries she had were consistent with her story, including the strangulation, said Owens.
The deputies then arrested the man, identified as 56-year-old Terry Eugene Martin Jr., and charged him with felony assault with strangulation, felony assault inflicting serious bodily injury, misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, misdemeanor assault on a female, misdemeanor communicating threats and misdemeanor common law false imprisonment.
Owens said that the victim told deputies that the incident began after one of the two gathered change into a bag for a purchase, causing the bag to break. The broken bag began an argument, at which point Martin allegedly began to assault the victim, eventually strangling her. At one point the woman escaped the home, at which point Martin grabbed her by the hair and pulled her back inside, said Owens.
Martin was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center and was not given a bond due to the domestic nature of the charges.
