Kannapolis man charged with murder after shooting leaves one dead

KANNAPOLIS — A Kannapolis man was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in relation to a shooting that left one man dead on Monday.

The incident occurred at approximately 8:45 p.m. on Monday, when officers with the Kannapolis Police Department responded to a home in the 1900 block of Lane Street in reference to gunshots being fired, according to a release from the city.

When the officers arrived on scene, they reportedly found 43-year-old Ebony Gill suffering from a gunshot wound. The release states that Gill died on scene from the injury.

According to the release, the shooting occurred during an altercation between several people at the home.

Eighteen-year-old Jawaren Brion Smith was arrested with the assistance of residents in the area after he attempted to flee the scene, according to the release. He was charged with felony first-degree murder and placed in the Cabarrus County Detention Center without bond, according to online jail records.
