ROWAN COUNTY — A three-hour standoff between deputies and two people inside a home ended on Tuesday when deputies entered the home and found the two hiding in a closet.

The incident began at approximately 3:13 p.m. on Tuesday, when the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office contacted the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office and asked for assistance with serving a warrant for the arrest of 32-year-old Emma Jane Babcock at a home in the 4200 block of Amity Hill Road, said Chief Deputy Jason Owens, a spokesperson for the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office.

When deputies arrived at the home, they reportedly found Babcock and a man standing outside the home. The two people then ran inside the home and barricaded themselves inside, Owens said.

The sheriff’s office then reportedly called for the Special Response Team to respond to the home. Owens said that the SRT responded and surrounded the home, after which all of the residents but Babcock and the man were evacuated from the home and nearby residents were evacuated as well. Deputies were informed by residents that the man was in possession of a firearm, said Owens.

Deputies surrounded the home for nearly three hours as they attempted to negotiate with the two people to come out over a PA system, said Owens. Deputies also reportedly introduced gas into the home twice in unsuccessful attempts to force the two to come out.

At approximately 5:55 p.m., deputies reportedly entered the home and began to search it room by room. Owens said that Babcock and the man, identified by the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office as 23-year-old Quamont Keshawn Wilson, were found locked inside a closet and arrested. They were then checked by EMS personnel for injuries and reportedly transported to the Iredell County Detention Center. No one was injured in the incident, confirmed Owens.

Babcock was charged with felony possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell or deliver and felony possession of a schedule II controlled substance with intent to manufacture. She was given a bond of $75,000, according to Dara St. John, networking specialist with Iredell County.

Wilson was charged with a misdemeanor probation violation. He was placed in the jail and given a $3,000 bond, according to St. John.
