SALISBURY — Earlier this week, Happy Roots, a leading organization dedicated to promoting community wellness and sustainable living, announced a new addition to its board of directors — founder and CEO of nationally-renowned nonprofit Harlem Grown Tony Hillery.
With a commitment to urban farming and youth development, Hillery has transformed Harlem Grown into a beacon of sustainability in New York City. Similar to Happy Roots, Harlem Grown empowers young people through hands-on education in urban farming, sustainability and nutrition, fostering a new generation of healthy and informed individuals.
“We are beyond thrilled to welcome Tony Hillery to our board of directors,” said Ashley Honbarrier, the founder and executive director of Happy Roots. “Tony’s been a mentor and champion of Happy Roots for the past few years, making trips to N.C. to support our efforts. His passion, innovative approach and unwavering dedication to community empowerment align perfectly with our mission. His expertise will be invaluable as we navigate growth, expand our programs, and continue to impact Salisbury and beyond.”
Hillery’s journey with Harlem Grown began in 2011 when he sought to address issues of food justice and inequality in Harlem. Under his leadership, the organization has grown from a single community garden to multiple urban farms, providing fresh produce and educational opportunities to thousands of children and their families.
“I am thrilled to join the board of directors at Happy Roots,” Hillery said. “I strongly believe in the power of change within our communities. I am eager to contribute to the outstanding work being accomplished in Salisbury by Happy Roots. Together, we can inspire and cultivate the next generation.”
Happy Roots is dedicated to creating green spaces, supporting local agriculture, and providing educational programs that promote environmental stewardship and healthy living. The addition of Hillery to the board marks a significant milestone in the organization’s growth and commitment to fostering sustainable communities.
