Can’t believe college students would be interested in opera? Come witness for yourself. Hearing is believing!
At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 31, Omwake-Dearborn Chapel will resound as Catawba College students perform songs from various opera scenes, including Mozart’s “Cosí Fan Tutte” and “The Magic Flute,” Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi,” and even Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess.” This free performance will include several selections in English, along with Italian, French and German selections.

Author at RPL
Children’s author and poet Julia Ebel will be at Rowan Public Library Headquarters Tuesday, April 3 at 7 p.m. Ebel will discuss poetry, writing, and keeping family stories.
Julia Ebel is the author of several children’s books including “Mama’s Wreaths” and “Dresses, Dreams, and Beadwood Leaves.” This free event will be held in the Stanback auditorium.
Spring Pops Concert
The Salisbury-Rowan Choral Society’s annual spring pops concert, “Fool For Love,” will be at Catawba College’s Peeler-Crystal Lounge on Sunday, April 1 at 3 p.m. Featured in three segments, this concert will revolve around love, life and spring.
Tickets may be purchased at the door, $10 for adults and $5 for youth, which includes not only admission to the concert but also hors d’oeuvres, desserts and beverages.
Proceeds will go to support the Choral Society’s goal of purchasing an electric piano. Performances of each season’s concerts are presented at nursing homes, assisted living facilities and rest homes in Rowan County.

OCT auditions
CONCORD — Old Courthouse Theatre will hold auditions April 30 and May 1 from 7-9 p.m. for students ages 8-18 for the upcoming Youth Theatre production of “Alice in Wonderland.” Performance dates are June 21-24.

Musical ‘Huck Finn’
RCCA presents “Huck Finn the Musical” on Sunday, April 22 at 2:30 p.m. in Catawba ‘s Keppel Auditorium.
It features the original music of Salisbury hometown legend Billy Burke, with script and lyrics by Catawba professor Arnold Colbath.
The first version of the work was produced by Catawba’s Blue Masque in 1954. When the work was brought back by Catawba four years later, songs were added, and the work orchestrated for a 10-piece instrumental ensemble, directed by George Wilson.

Earth Day
Earth Day on the Greenway is a free event hosted by the City of Salisbury on Monday, April 2, on the Prescott Section of the Salisbury Greenway.
This educational opportunity features stations for all ages. Rain date is April 16.

Modern Film Fest
CONCORD — Modern Film Fest, the series that brings free screenings of independent films to the Davis Theatre, begins its 2012-13 season on Friday, March 30, at 9 p.m. after the downtown Concord Art Walk.
The film is “Catching Dreams,” a documentary chronicling the eight-year journey of a one-time Olympic hopeful who wants to become part of Cirque du Soleil.
At 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 5 is “The Day Carl Sandburg Died,” about the life and times of the world-renowned poet, historian, storyteller and musician.

Spring craft show
Salisbury Parks and Recreation Department’s second annual Spring Craft Show is Saturday, March 31, 9 a.m-3 p.m. at the Salisbury Civic Center, 315 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Ave.
The event will feature indoor and outdoor vendors, rain or shine, with door prizes given throughout the day. Food and refreshments will be sold.

Young artist reception
“Celebrating Rowan County’s Young Artists” is a display of artwork featuring the works of students representing Salisbury-Rowan County’s public, independent and home-schools.
The next stage of the exhibit, which runs March 31-April 19, features Rowan-Salisbury Elementary Schools. The free reception to honor these students and their families is Thursday, April 5, from 5-6:30 p.m. at Waterworks Visual Arts Center, 123 E. Liberty St.
Beethoven in Lexington
LEXINGTON — In celebration of the its 80th anniversary, the North Carolina Symphony comes to Lexington with “Beethoven and Beyond,” a program focusing on great works by Beethoven, Mozart, Wagner and Liszt.

Reed Gold Mine event
LOCUST — At the Spring Festival at Reed Gold Mine State Historic Site, visitors can try to “strike it rich” with the start of the panning season on Saturday, March 31 from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
There will be family fun games, tours of underground mines and a restored stamp mill. Museum staff will assist visitors with the search for gold in newly rebuilt panning troughs. The panning tickets are $2, which includes a pan of ore (children ages eight and under will need parents’ help with panning).
Families may choose an all inclusive ticket for $5, which includes all games and activities except panning, or pay $1 for individual games. Prizes will be award to winners and a gold nugget will be “found” in the panning area.

NC Brewers Festival
HUNTERSVILLE — Tickets are on sale now for the second annual NC Brewers and Music Festival to be held Saturday May 12 from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. in Historic Rural Hill in Huntersville.
