Civic Leadership Academy applications available

SALISBURY — Applications are being accepted for Rowan County’s Civic Leadership Academy, a comprehensive program designed to educate and engage community members in local government operations and services.

The purpose of the academy is to welcome, teach and encourage leaders in civic matters with the hopes that county leadership will learn from civic-minded citizens.

The core goals of the academy are to ensure that each participant gains the following: a better understanding of county functions and services; improved communication between citizens and government; knowledge about current challenges facing our community; and opportunities to meet and develop relationships with county officials including elected officials, administration and directors.

The application period will continue through Sept. 20 for the academy, which is free. However, there are certain criteria to participate including you must be a Rowan County resident, be 21 or older and be able to attend five of the eight sessions.

Class size will be limited to 20 citizens per class, which meet on Thursdays from 5:30-8:30 p.m. in the J. Newton Cohen Sr. Room of the county building, 130 W. Innes St., Salisbury. Dinner will be served. 

Dates and topics include:

  • Oct. 3: Leadership anD getting to know each other — DiSC personality test
  • Oct. 10: County structure and leadership
  • Oct. 17: Internal services: budgeting and finance, human resources, information technology
  • Oct. 24: Public safety: sheriff’s office and emergency services
  • Oct. 31: Not in my back yard: planning and development, building inspections and animal control
  • Nov. 7: Social services and health department
  • Nov. 14: Cooperative Extension, register of deeds, library, airport, tax administration and collection, elections and veterans services
  • Nov. 22: Environmental management, parks and recreation and economic development

Please note that the topics may be subject to change.

The program will culminate in a graduation ceremony Jan. 20, 2025, at 6 p.m.
