SALISBURY — One man is dead and a child injured following a shooting on Rowan Mill Road at 5:30 this morning, according to police.

A report of shots fired came in from neighbors of 128 Rowan Mill Road and when officers arrived they found an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound. In spite of lifesaving efforts, the man died at the scene. While officers were still securing the scene, they were notified a child had been taken to Novant with gunshot wounds from the same incident. The child was then transferred to another hospital and remains stable, though injuries are reported to be life threatening.

Neighbors, who did not want to be identified because they are worried that the gunman may return, said another shooting took place at the same house Thursday morning about 11:15 a.m.

“It was broad daylight and the man came up and started shooting, and he clearly didn’t care about being seen,” said one neighbor. Saturday morning she was up and heard shots fired at her neighbor’s house, and when she looked out, she said there were at least two shooters, one in the side yard of a vacant lot and one in front of the house. She said she called 911 and was on the phone with emergency dispatch when a woman came out of the house carrying a child and saying her baby had been shot. “I told dispatchers that a child had been injured,” she said.

Other neighbors heard the shots on both Thursday and Saturday but at first were not sure what they were hearing. “It wasn’t a rifle, because we’ve heard those,”said one man. “This used to be country and we’d hear hunters. So I knew it wasn’t a rifle.”

Police did say there were numerous others in the house at the time of the shooting including kids in a range of ages, but no one else was injured.

Based on evidence and information already gathered, police want to reassure residents that the incident was not random. No direct threat to the greater community has been identified.
