MURPHY (AP) — Rescuers say a 2-year-old boy is safe after he wandered away from his grandfather’s home in the North Carolina mountains and spent the night in a wooded area.
Cherokee County rescue squad spokesman Warren Golden that Austin Frey was taken to a Chattanooga, Tenn., hospital, but that he would be OK.
The boy was discovered this morning about 2,000 feet from his grandparents’ house. Nearly 200 people spent the night searching the area near Murphy. But Golden says it was rough terrain with rocky ledges.
Frey’s grandfather told police the family was unpacking their car after returning from a Florida trip when the boy wandered off. The grandfather said he wasn’t able to catch up with the boy, who was wearing shorts and a short sleeved shirt.
