KANNAPOLIS — The Kannapolis city council recently approved $68,000 for its 2024-2025 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) fund allocation. The funds are designated for activities that benefit low- and moderate-income residents within the city of Kannapolis.

Grants were awarded to:

• Academic Learning Center — $2,500 to pay stipends for certified teachers to deliver instruction before and after school hours and to purchase instructional materials
• AYA House, Inc. — $5,000 to cover operating expenses for transitional housing
• Cabarrus Health Alliance — $5,000 to provide dental services for uninsured Kannapolis city school children
• Cabarrus Rowan Community Health — $10,000 to provide dental services for uninsured/low income adults
• Classroom Central — $2,000 to provide free school supplies to Kannapolis city school (KCS) teachers
• Conflict Resolution — $4,000 to sustain crime prevention services for 6 different programs and to cover overhead expenses for Teen Court and Truancy program
• Cooperative Christian Ministry — $4,500 to support staff salaries to assist families and individuals in crisis
• El Puente Hispano — $1,000 to assist Hispanic families in school performance and provide tools to eliminate barriers
• He’s Alive Church — $1,000 to help cover costs of the “Mentor Monday” summer program
• Jr. Charity League — $3,000 to provide uniforms, coats and shoes to Kannapolis city school students in need
• Main St Market — $2,000 to provide equal access to healthy local food, and help cover overhead costs
• Operation Homeless — $1,000 to provide funds to continue the soup kitchen operation and to help cover overhead costs
• Midway Opportunity House — $2,500 to cover the cost of bus passes, prescriptions and office visits for homeless individuals seeking services
• Prosperity Unlimited, Inc. — $5,000 for providing comprehensive housing counseling
• Rowan-Cabarrus YMCA — $5,000 for new program to address youth/teen mental health
• Rowan Helping Ministries — $4,500 will provide support for the Crisis Assistance Program experiencing financial hardship
• Second Course Culinary Program — $2,000 to cover costs of the culinary program helping at risk individuals to acquire employment
• Step Up to Leadership — $3,000 to cover cost of adolescent and young adult leadership program with focus on conflict resolution
• Vision for Life — $2,000 for mentoring and parenting programs

The funds come from the federal Community Development Block Grant Program. Each year Kannapolis receives these monies that can be awarded to non-profit organizations who deliver pertinent services to residents who are in need. Applications are reviewed by the city’s Community Improvement Commission and city staff, who present funding recommendations to city council.
