Area Sports Briefs: Locals helping Catawba volleyball

College volleyball
Catawba is off to a 1-6 start.
Junior outside hitter Kelcie Love (West Rowan) leads the team with 60 kills.
Sophomore libero Riley Hill (East Rowan) has a team-high 75 digs, while senior defensive specialist Kary Hales (Carson) has 56 digs.

The Salem College Spirits, coached by former South Rowan and Catawba assistant coach Barry Rymer, are off to a 6-3 start.
Two of the key players for the Spirits are Rymer’s daughters who were standouts at South Rowan. Leah, a freshman setter, has 200 assists. Anna, a senior middle blocker, has 100 kills.

Lenoir-Rhyne, coached by former South Rowan star Nicole Barringer, is off to a 9-0 start.
College golf
The Pfeiffer men’s golf team opened the 2024-25 season with a ninth-place finish at the Kinder-Williams Invitational hosted by Bridgewater College.
Tyler Kepley (West Rowan) shot 77-76 (9-over) and was 39th.
NFL
Javon Hargrave (North Rowan) was credited with two tackles in San Francisco’s 23-17 loss to Minnesota on Sunday.
College football
Freshman Mike Geter (Salisbury) scored his first touchdown for Catawba in Saturday’s win at Shaw.
Geter’s 16-yard touchdown TD catch helped Catawba beat Shaw, 37-28.
Geter has seven catches for 55 yards.
He’s also involved in the return game and has returned three kickoffs for 64 yards and two punts for 20 yards.

The stat sheet credited Jalon Walker (Salisbury) with two tackles in Saturday’s 13-12 win against Kentucky, although Walker was a lot more impactful than it sounds. He caused problems for Kentucky blockers on almost every snap, whether he was lined up inside or outside.

Virginia Union linebacker Jabril Norman (Salisbury) made 12 tackles in a recent 33-21 loss to Hampton.

Freshman Jay McGruder (Carson) got his first five carries (for 5 yards) for Southern Virginia in a blowout loss against Bridgewater.

UMass transfer Jonny Hassard (West Rowan) is a starting offensive tackle for the Charlotte 49ers.

Georgia Tech’s Zeek Biggers (West Rowan) has seven tackles, a fumble recovery and a blocked kick.
Pro baseball
Cobb Hightower (East Rowan) socked his second pro homer on Tuesday. It was no-doubter to left field.
Hightower hit his first homer on Saturday.

Vance Honeycutt (Salisbury) made dazzling catches and showed great speed on the bases in his first pro games for the Orioles with Delmarva and Aberdeen, although he has some adjustments to make at the plate.
Honeycutt batted .176 with five RBIs in 51 at-bats.
High school baseball
West Rowan’s Cole Blevins launched his fourth homer of the fall baseball league season on Tuesday.
High school basketball
JJ Andrews, a 6-foot-6 junior shooting guard from Little Rock, Ark., is a four-star recruit who has offers from LSU, Arkansas, Missouri and Illinois, among others.
He’s the son of Salisbury-Rowan Hall of Famer Janetta Heggins.
High school soccer
SALISBURY — Salisbury had a key Central Carolina Conference win against West Davidson on Tuesday at Ludwig Stadium.
The Hornets (9-0-2, 2-0) got two first-half goals from Hines Busby in a span of about four minutes, Sam Goodman and Henry Austin had the assists.
High school volleyball
SPENCER — Salisbury stayed in second place in the Central Carolina Conference with a 25-7, 25-20 and 25-11 sweep at North Rowan on Tuesday.
Ashley Yang had 14 aces and 21 assists.
Ava Morris had seven aces and six kills.
Addie Myers, Carmen McQueen, Dayami Acevedo and Jordan Henderson had four kills each.
High school football
Kendre Harrison, rated as one of the nation’s top high school basketball and football players, has returned to Reidsville. He had briefly transferred to Providence Day.
