SPENCER — “I’ve never won anything like this in my life,” said Clint Ostwalt when he walked into Han-Dee Hugo’s Thursday afternoon to claim the brand new, brilliant blue Jeep Wrangler he’d won.

The contest was part of the company’s launch of its loyalty program, called Han-Dee Hugo’s Craziez Rewards. The leaders of Han-Dee Hugo’s, which is a division of Sampson-Bladen Oil Company based in Clinton, wanted something that would “go out and get us engaged with the communities we are in,” said Doug Parker, executive director of marketing.

It brought 20,000 new loyalty members and 70,000 entries during the contest period of June 12 through Sept. 8. Anyone who downloaded the store’s app and then purchased any of a myriad of qualifying items was entered.

When Ostwalt walked in to the store, he initially looked like he was not yet convinced it was all a prank.

“I’m still in shock,” he said. Asked how his family felt, he said they were shocked as well. “They told me when I come home with it, they’ll believe it then.”

Ostwalt is a former warehouse worker, who is in between jobs right now and thinking of getting certified to work in armed security.

“I see a lot of companies are looking for that right now,” he said. Uncomfortable being in the spotlight, he nonetheless broke into a full smile when Vice President of retail Manly Clark announced he was the winner and presented him with the keys.

He also received numerous products from sponsors, a gas card and a year’s worth of car washes from Jeff Klinker, director of car wash operations for Sampson-Blade.

“We couldn’t think of anyone more deserving to have won this,” said Candise Lawrence, regional manager of Han-Dee Hugos. “We’re so excited for him.”

The next loyalty promotion will be a drawing a week for a year’s worth of gas between October and December. Twelve people will win. The Han-Dee Hugo’s mobile app offers customers a loyalty program that includes digital stamp cards, a store locator map, sign-up rewards, friend referral bonuses, perks for birthdays and games.

A fairly quiet young man, Ostwalt said he hopes, believes, that this will be the start of an upward swing in a life that has had some ups and downs. He was getting a tour of his new vehicle before it was time to head home to show his family that the new Jeep was, indeed, very much real.
