School calendar changes
KANNAPOLIS — The number of school days for local students will remain the same next academic year.
Both Kannapolis City and Rowan-Salisbury school systems have received waivers from the State Board of Education allowing them to use the five additional days, which were added to the calendar by legislators last year, for professional development in lieu of instructional time.
The Kannapolis Board of Education approved a new calendar Monday to replace the existing 2012-13 calendar that included 185 student days.
The calendar includes the additional of four mandatory teacher workdays on Oct. 26, Jan. 22, Feb. 18 and June 10.
The original calendar had May 3 as an early release day for students, that will become a full day.
The Easter holiday has been moved from April 1 to March 29. April 1 will become an annual leave day for teachers.
The final day of school will be Friday, June 7 rather than Monday, June 10.
The Rowan-Salisbury school board has yet to approve a new calendar.
