Protecting Social Security and the Family Caregiver Support Program are some of the top priorities for seniors in the upcoming election. The North Carolina AARP is holding a Community Conversation to address these topics on Wednesday, Oct. 16, at 10:30 a.m. at Rufty-Holmes Senior Center, 1120 S. Martin Luther King, Jr. Ave., Salisbury. The free event is open to anyone age 55 and older. Anyone interested can call 704-216-7714 to register.

“AARP is fighting to get candidates, regardless of party, to offer solutions to protect our hard-earned Social Security and to support family caregivers,” said Rebecca Gilbert, state AARP representative for the greater Charlotte area. “At this interactive Community Conversation, we’ll share some ways you can help ensure that Social Security and Caregiving are at the top of candidates and elected officials’ minds. Seniors can have a big impact in this year’s election.”

The Salisbury-Rowan Chapter 4314 of AARP will provide light refreshments. The chapter meets on the first Thursday of the month at Rufty-Holmes Senior Center at 1 p.m. for informative programs, community service and socialization.

“We welcome visitors and new members can join the chapter for just $4 a year,” said Chapter President Lena Sellers. “Our Nov. 7 program will feature Jason Hord, fire chief of Granite Quarry, talking about fire safety for seniors.” 

AARP, with more than 38 million members nationally, is one of the largest non-profit organizations in the country. It advocates for the rights and interests of people 50 and older. It also provides a variety of informative programs and publications of interest to seniors, as well as discounts for travel, restaurants and other services. Membership is available at aarp.org.
