KANNAPOLIS — A.L. Brown’s football team put the ball on the turf six times on Friday and lost five fumbles, but still found a way to win 21-14 on homecoming against the Cox Mill Chargers.
The Wonders were favored substantially against a winless team, but it turned out to be a scrap. When Cox Mill scored with 1:44 left to deadlock the Greater Metro Conference game at 14-all, fans at Memorial Stadium braced for overtime.
But CJ Gray’s 50-yard touchdown pass to Maddox Langley won it for the Wonders (4-2, 2-1) with just 15 seconds left on the scoreboard.
An interception by Langley set up a scoring run by Gray for a 7-0 lead, but the Chargers (0-7, 0-3) answered. It was 7-all at halftime.
The Wonders forged ahead 14-7 early in the second half on a Gray-to-Langley TD that covered 24 yards. Langley made a one-handed snag.
Gray had modest stats, 7-for-19 passing for 133 yards, plus 48 rushing yards on 10 carries, but he made the big plays.
Mekhi Herron rushed for 121 yards on 11 tries, while Bryce Morgan pounded out 75 yards on 14 carries.
Langley had four catches for 109 yards. Brian Rojo kicked three PATs.
A.L. Brown’s defense came up with a flurry of turnovers. Jesse Morton had an interception and a fumble recovery. Keith Kellam had an interception. Gavin Yow recovered a fumble. Cainen Miller blocked a punt.
