SALISBURY — The Catawba College Shuford School of Performing Arts and the Blue Masque present “The Revolutionists” in the Florence Busby Corriher Theatre on Oct. 19 at 2:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 20 at 2:30 pm. Four women will lose their heads in this irreverent, girl-powered comedy set during the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror.

Playwright Olympe De Gouge, assassin Charlotte Corday, former queen (and fan of ribbons) Marie Antoinette, and Haitian rebel Marianne Angelle hang out, murder Marat, and try to beat back the extremist insanity in Paris of 1793. This grand and dream-tweaked comedy is about violence and legacy, art and activism, feminism and terrorism, compatriots and chosen sisters, and how we change the world. 

The Revolutionists is directed by senior Winter Hamilton. The set will be designed by senior Lindsey Hart, costumes designed by first-year Madison McCloud, assistant costume and wig design by junior Francine Green-Thomas, Lights and Sound designed by Teresa Green. The crew includes Kerala Bannister, Adison Schwab and Julia Rockwell. The cast features four students: Alana Williamson as Marianne Angelle, Jovey McFarland as Olympe De Gouge, and first years Grayce Pitman as Marie Antionette, and Allie Rahman as Charlotte Corday. 

“The Revolutionists is a fantastic show telling the stories of these four women,” Hamilton said. “You will laugh, cry and will not forget their stories.” 

The Blue Masque is the oldest student-led organization on Catawba’s campus. The program predates the theatre department at Catawba and has presented student-directed, designed, and produced plays each year for nearly 100 years. Last season featured two productions: “Natural Shocks” by Lauren Gunderson in the fall and “Alabaster” by Audrey Cefaly in the spring.

This season features three productions: “No Exit” by Jean-Paul Sartre, “The Revolutionists” by Lauren Gunderson, and “Breadcrumbs” by Jennifer Haley. 

Tickets are $15 for adults 18-55; $10 for adults 55+ and non-Catawba students; and free for Catawba students, faculty and staff.
