National Red Ribbon Week is an annual campaign that raises awareness about the importance of living drug-free lives. From Oct. 23 to Oct. 31, schools, community organizations and families across the country promote healthy choices and celebrate a commitment to a drug-free future.
YSUP Rowan in partnership with Center for Prevention Services, is proud to play a pivotal role in this important initiative, focusing on raising awareness about youth substance use. Throughout Red Ribbon Week and afterwards, these organizations will partner with local schools to host engaging and educational activities. These events aim to empower young people with the knowledge and skills they need to make healthy choices.
Highlights of the planned activities include educational presentations, a Medication Take Back event on Oct. 29 from 2-4 p.m. at Corriher-Lipe Middle School and creative projects that encourage students to express their commitment to a drug-free lifestyle.
In a show of strong support, Mayor Karen Alexander and Salisbury City Council along with Mayor Charles R. Bowman III, and the Town of Rockwell, have issued a proclamation declaring Red Ribbon Week in Salisbury and Rockwell. This proclamation emphasizes both municipalities’ dedication to the well-being of our youth.
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, nearly 70 percent of high school seniors have tried alcohol, and about 50 percent have used an illegal drug at least once. Additionally, 8.33 percent to 12- to 17-year-olds nationwide report using drugs in the last month. These statistics underscore the critical need for preventative education and community involvement, which YSUP Rowan is proud to champion through their Coalition and Youth Empowerment Team.
Communities are encouraged to show their support by wearing red during Red Ribbon Week and starting the conversation with youth in their lives about substance use. Together, we can make a difference and inspire our youth to lead drug-free lives.
