SALISBURY — Salisbury is one of more than 200 cities nationwide set to March to Protect All Our Basic Freedoms on Saturday, Nov. 2, at noon.

The event comes just three days before the General Election and will start at the Rowan County Building, located at 130 W. Innes St. in Salisbury.

The Women’s March is coming to every state in this country and this event is being organized by local representatives of the larger Women’s March movement.

“We are united in our commitment to freedom and dignity for all Americans and putting our leaders on notice — from Supreme Court Justices to candidates running for office to sitting elected officials on both sides of the aisle,” a release from the organizers said. “We will not stop marching, protesting, voting, running for office until all of our freedoms are protected.

“We aim to be loud about our rights and our values. Abortion restrictions are unpopular: 80 percent of Americans want abortion to be legal.”

According to the Guttmacher Institute, nearly one in four U.S. women (23 percent) will have an abortion in their lifetime.

The Guttmacher Institute is a research and policy NGO that aims to improve sexual health and expand reproductive rights worldwide. The organization was started in 1968 and functions as both a research and educational organization. It operates mainly in the United States but also focuses on developing countries.

The Women’s March organizers are demanding the freedom to decide how, when and if women bear children, the freedom to raise children free from the horror of gun violence, the freedom to vote and participate fully and completely in a functioning democracy, and the freedom to live in a country invested in everyone’s prosperity.

The event will begin with a few speakers in front of the Administrative Building, followed by a March covering the Bell Tower Green and a few city blocks. All ages and abilities are welcome (there are benches available for those with mobility issues to remain in place during the march).

Street parking is available near the Bell Tower Green.
