High school sports roundup: East girls 10th after Round 1 of 3A state tourney

GOLF

SOUTHERN PINES — East Rowan’s golfers stood in 10th place after Monday’s first round at Longleaf.

Jaelyn Earnhardt made two birdies and shot 86. Kaley Pfister shot 89. Cailey Ludwig shot 104.

South Rowan’s Ava Blume shot 98.

The second round of the 36-hole event is on Tuesday.

TENNIS

HOLLY SPRINGS — Salisbury’s doubles team of Lucy Barr/Meredith Williams won two matches before losing in the semifinals of the 2A State Championships on Saturday.

The North Carolina School of Science & Math team that beat them included former Hornet Cora Wymbs. Wymbs and her partner lost in the final.

Salisbury’s second doubles team of Addie Griffith/Lola Koontz lost a close match in the first round.

In the 3A State Championships, Carson’s Allie Martin was eliminated in the first round.

Carson coach Kayela Galloway announced that she’s stepping down as the school’s girls coach.

 

VOLLEYBALL

HENDERSONVILLE — West Rowan started strong but was swept by top-seeded West Henderson in the third round of the 3A state playoffs. WR finished 12-12.

Carson won at Ashe County in a sweep and travels to West Henderson on Tuesday. The other two teams left in the 3A West bracket are North Iredell and Kings Mountain.

 

CROSS COUNTRY

Carson’s duo of Jorge Clemente-Garcia and Eric Gillis did it again on Saturday, running 1-2 in the 3A Midwest Regional at Salisbury Community Park. Clemente-Garcia clocked 16:01, while Gillis ran 16:10.

They are individual qualifiers for the state meet in Kernersville. Also qualifying for the state meet were South Rowan’s Ethan Overby and West Rowan’s Luke Henson.

SALISBURY — South Rowan freshman Hope Julian clocked 20:00 and had a runner-up finish in the 3A Midwest Regional held at Salisbury Community Park. In addition to Julian, East Rowan’s Sadie Featherstone and Carson’s Emily Landaverde were individual qualifiers for the state meet.

DOBSON — Salisbury’s Samuel Fatovic placed fourth in 17:19 in the 2A Midwest Regional held at Fisher River Park on Saturday and was an individual qualifier for the state meet.

 

FOOTBALL

CJ Gray had an early scoring run for the Wonders, but Mooresville swamped A.L. Brown 49-7 on Friday to give the Wonders a 4-5 record heading into the traditional Concord game. Mooresville (8-1) got three TD passes and a rushing score from Brody Norman.

Carson got a TD run from Travis Sharkey and Griffin Barber threw a TD pass to Jacob Rockwell in a 23-14 SPC loss to Central Cabarrus. Barber ran for a 2-point conversion. Jase Overcash recovered a fumble for the Cougars (3-6, 1-5). Cruise Monteith had an interception. Damonte James scored all three Central TDs.
