GRANITE QUARRY — A structure fire involving an abandoned house and outbuilding in the 600 block of Dunns Mountain Church Road Wednesday night around 8 p.m. ended in the collapse of both buildings.

No one was injured in the incident that closed U.S. Hwy 52 while crews battled the blaze. The fire was so far off the road and set among such a dense expanse of woods that access was a challenge. Firefighters had to cut away trees and brush and use long hose lays to reach the fire. The adjacent woods were also damaged by the spread of the fire.

Once the buildings had collapsed and the fire was under control, crews finished with a foam retardant to prevent rekindling, according to officials.

Crews from Granite Quarry, Salisbury, Union, Rockwell Rural, Rockwell City, Gold Hill, Millers Ferry, East Spencer, Spencer, Bostian Heights, the Rowan Rescue Squad and the fire marshal’s office all responded.

A cause has not been determined and the fire marshal’s office continues to investigate.
