Rowan County voters reelected two incumbents to the Rowan County Board of Commissioners, with both Mike Caskey and Craig Pierce winning on Tuesday.
Caskey and Pierce, the two Republican nominees, were challenged by Democrat Alissa Redmond and We the People Party member Mark Ortiz.
Caskey led the vote-getters with 39,659, or approximately 36 percent, while Pierce was close behind with 37,754, or approximately 34 percent. Redmond came in third with 23,088 votes, or approximately 21 percent, while Ortiz came in a distant fourth with 7,331 votes, or approximately 7 percent. Write-in candidates received 1,286 votes, or approximately 1 percent, with confirmed candidate Bobby Kemp, a Republican, likely leading the way.
“I appreciate everybody that ran against me, because that shows me that they care about the county and want what’s best. I appreciate the voters that supported me, because it shows me they appreciated all of the work I’ve done during my 12 years in office,” said Pierce.
Pierce said that he looks forward to continuing to work for the betterment of Rowan County during his next four years in office.
Of note, Redmond carried Salisbury, Spencer and East Spencer, receiving more votes in all eight Salisbury-based precincts and the two towns. The largest discrepancy in her favor was in the West Ward III precinct, where she received 670 votes to Caskey’s 40 and Pierce’s 50. Meanwhile, the Republicans handily won many of the other precincts in the county, with heavy discrepancies in their favor in areas such as China Grove, Enochville and the Locke precincts.
Caskey is currently deployed to the Middle East as a member of the North Carolina National Guard and so was unavailable for comment.
Election results are unofficial tallies until confirmed by the board of elections.
