Salisbury teen charged in fatal crash day after car chase

A 33-year-old Concord woman has died in a fatal car crash and a 17-year-old Salisbury man has been charged in connection to the crash, according to a release from N.C. State Highway Patrol on Friday afternoon.

The release says Salisbury police attempted to stop the driver of a Red Mazda CX9 on Jake Alexander Boulevard around 9:45 p.m. Oct. 30, but broke off the chase when the vehicles reached the Davidson County line on Interstate 85 north.

Reports do not indicate the cause of the chase, but reports say that the same vehicle was involved in a fatal crash at 7:37 a.m. Oct. 31 on N.C. Hwy. 150 in Davidson County.

The passenger of the Mazda, Kayla Lynn Taylor, of Concord, died at the scene of the crash. 

During the investigation, state troopers were notified that two juveniles being treated at Rowan Regional Hospital in Salisbury for injuries consistent with a car crash and that the two may have been in the Mazda. Salisbury police, N.C. State Bureau of Investigations and state troopers confirmed they were indeed involved in the crash.

According to state p0lice, Kaiell Zachkery Thompkins, 17, of Salisbury, was the driver of the Mazda at the time of the crash and he has been charged and placed in a juvenile holding facility in Concord. The specific charges were not released.

During the on-scene investigation of the crash, the roadway was closed in the area for approximately three hours. 

Highway patrol is continuing the investigation.
