SALISBURY — The Honors Program of Livingstone College hosted Geek Week earlier this month with the theme of “The Civility of Servant-Leadership.”
As the events fosters opportunities for all Livingstone College to engage in scholarly initiatives and friendly academic competitions, Geek Week opens doors for every Blue Bear to acquire professional experience, general knowledge and monetary rewards in an academically-rewarding environment.
Students participated in paper and speech presentations, attended financial literacy, voter awareness, mental health awareness, salary negotiation, resume’ and personal statement development workshops, and quiz bowl competition.
Winners of the paper presentation showcased a digital critical analysis of “Black Women Sexuality in the Cultural Marketplace,” highlighting the works of author Bell Hooks and subjugation to human sexual trafficking regarding the dehumanized and devalued Khoikhoi South African woman Saartjie ‘Sara(h)’ Baartman.
The presentation by freshmen Darryl Fisher of Zimbabwe, Mohammaed Ibrahim of Nigeria, and Asana Maltiti, Yves Kwawu and Jephter Ofori of Ghana, discussed theories and practices regarding the defilement and fascination of black bodies by Europeans.
Winners of the Honda Campus All-Star Challenge quiz bowl tournament were freshmen Carter Thompson and Olivia Watts of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Joel Thompson of Accra, Ghana.
“I’ve attended Geek Week for the past four years,” SGA President Ne’Khia Ray said. “This year not only showcased quality research, but with our elevated number of international students, we were able to link our kinship within the African diaspora of heart-tugging global issues that impacts people of African descent everywhere. I loved it.”
