High school girls basketball: Hornets lose first two games

HIGH POINT — Salisbury’s girls opened the season with a 58-38 loss to North Surry on Friday in a game played as part of a showcase event at Wesleyan Christian Academy.

The Hornets were tied with the Greyhounds 9-9 early in the second quarter, but North Surry (1-1) pulled away to a 24-15 halftime lead and was in control the rest of the way.

Veterans Mariana Zapata and Torese Evans scored 12 each to lead the Hornets.

Salisbury lost its two big scorers from last season — MaKayla Noble and Jamyrah Cherry.

HIGH POINT — On Saturday, the Hornets lost 68-31 to the NC Girls Basketball Academy (4-1), based in Durham.

Evans led the Hornets (0-2) with seven points, while Keiara Spruill scored six.

“We’ve got to make more layups and cut down on the turnovers,” Salisbury head coach Lakai Brice said. “Our defensive effort was good, but we just have to score the ball better. We’ll get better each game.”
