Update: Weather alert issued for fire danger in central North Carolina until Thursday midday

Published 1:46 am Thursday, December 5, 2024

An updated report was issued from the National Weather Service on Thursday at 1:43 a.m. for fire danger until noon. The alert is for Caldwell Mountains, Greater Caldwell, Burke Mountains and Greater Burke as well as Avery, Alexander, Davie, Catawba and Rowan counties.

“Following the passage of a dry cold front later this morning, relative humidity will fall into the low 30s and even upper 20s in some locations across the North Carolina Piedmont and Foothills this afternoon. Winds will be gusty along and behind the front, so conditions will be conducive meteorologically for the quick formation and spread of fires. Fine fuel moisture is expected to dry out quickly during the late morning and early afternoon. Based upon coordination with local land managers and forestry officials, a Fire Danger Statement is in effect for NC Forest Service Districts 2 and 10. Consult your local burn-permitting authority to determine whether you may burn outdoors. If you do burn, exercise extreme caution,” according to the NWS.
