High school girls basketball: Church scores 20 in East romp

GRANITE QUARRY — East Rowan’s experienced girls have a chance to be Rowan County best’s team this season.

Senior guard Mary Church, a Meredith commit, is expected to be one of the county’s top players and scored 20 to lead the Mustangs to a 62-36 win against Concord in the Mustangs’ season opener on Wednesday.

Kady Collins added 11 for the Mustangs.

East put together an explosive second quarter, putting up 26 points to take a 42-17 halftime lead over the Spiders (0-5, 0-1).

Nine players scored for East coach Bri Evans, who is in her fourth season at the helm.

“We still have so much to work on, but this was a great starting point,” Evans said.

East will be back in action on Thursday against North Stanly.
