Staff report
GRANITE QUARRY — East Rowan’s girls basketball team won 33-26 against North Stanly on Thursday in a defensive struggle.
“Ugly win, but it’s still a win, and we’ll take it,” East head coach Bri Evans said.
Mary Church was held to 12 points by the Comets, but Savannah Wise came through with a career-high 11.
Wise averaged 3.4 points per game last season. This was her first varsity game in double figures.
North Stanly (4-3) usually scores in the 40s, so it was a good defensive effort by East (2-0) in the non-conference game.
EAST scoring — Church 12, Wise 11, Featherstone 4, Smith 2, Alderman 2, Collins 2.

GRANITE QUARRY — North Stanly’s boys are strong and improved to 5-0 with a 79-53 win on Thursday against the Mustangs.
“Well, the game plan was to try and stop Jack (Williamson) and Jalen (Walker),” East coach Trey Ledbetter said. “The plan failed, so I failed. We didn’t slow them down.”
Williamson scored 28, while Walker, the son of coach George Walker, had 23 to lead the Comets.
“They’re really good,” Ledbetter said. “I think we improved from our first game (Wednesday’s loss to Concord), but we’re still not shooting the ball well, and shooting the basketball should be one of our strong points. We did cut down our turnovers from our first game, we did play hard, and Corbin Krider was aggressive and had his best game as a Mustang.”
Krider scored 18 points, but he was the only East player in double figures. Brady Ailshie was next with eight.
East takes on Northwest Cabarrus on Friday.
“Tough schedule and we’ve got to grow up in a hurry,” Ledbetter said.
